When traveling by Car

Whether you are planning on driving for a couple minutes away from home, or driving hundreds of miles, you should be prepared not only for yourself to be comfortable, but for the comfort of your puppy. There are a couple things to consider when driving to pick up your puppy.

Things to think about:

  • Where will you stop to stretch your legs?
  • How long will you drive before you need to stop for a break?
  • Will you need to spend the night before getting home? If so, where is a pet friendly hotel along your route?
  • Where will your new puppy potty that is safe? Safe from traffic, noise, distractions, but also where there is minimal amount of exposure to other dog or animal germs.
  • How long can puppy sleep in his carrier or someone’s arms while traveling?
  • Will puppy need to have a snack break with water and kibble?
  • Will puppy get motion sickness while traveling and need to be cleaned up?

  • Stay Calm and Confident. Puppies can sense when you are nervous or if this is your first puppy.
  • Make friends with the flight attendants.
  • Get to the airport early enough to potty the puppy.
  • Have a properly fitting harness or collar with leash.
  • If you have a long flight or connecting flights, make sure you have enough time in between flights to let puppy out to stretch its legs and get some water and a snack during the layover.
  • You will possibly need to let puppy out during a layover. You will want to search for a “family bathroom” so that you can close/lock the door to contain your puppy. Place something down on the floor to provide a barrier between puppy paws and germs. Then, let puppy out to potty, stretch its legs, get a little water, and maybe some food. The barrier could be an old bed sheet to place on the floor, or paper puppy pee pads. That way, they can easily be thrown away for the remainder of your trip home.
  • Know the map layout of the airports you will be traveling.
  • Pack light, so you have room for the doggie items in your bag to bring home. You will get a puppy packet to bring home with puppy.
  • Bring an empty duffel bag to consolidate all bags into one.
  • During winter months or crowded holiday travel, bring enough human medications for 2 days and a change of clothes in the event of bad weather or unexpected overnight delays.

Things You Need to be Prepared for
When Flying With a New Puppy

  • You will need a carrier that can fit under the seat in the cabin of the plane. Something similar to a Sherpa bag or a hard case carrier.
  • The carrier with your puppy inside will count as 1 of your 2 carry-on items in the plane’s cabin.
  • You will need to let the airline know you will be traveling with “Your pet.” There usually is a fee associated with flying with your puppy.
  • You can check the linked pet rules and regulations for different airlines: Delta Airlines, American Airlines, SouthWest Airlines, United Airlines.
  • You will need time to go check in at the counter prior to go thing trough security. You will need a pet ticket to board the plane with your puppy.
  • You can not have opened liquid items, such as water for your puppy, but you can have a collapsible cup or water bottle and get some once through the security check point. Some people bring an empty human coffee mug to be filled once through security.
  • If you bring a bag, purse, book bag, that item will count as 1 of your 2 allowed carry-on items. You will need a bag large enough to condense items inside of it.
  • At pickup, families receive a FaustHouse swag bag of items for your new puppy, including kibble and a blanket.

Airports and Hotels

Airports

When driving or flying for puppy pickup, the closest airport is in Greensboro, NC; it is called the Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO). Your puppy is about a 10 minute Uber ride from the Greensboro airport. Other area airports, about an hour to two hours away, are:

  • Raleigh/Durham Airport (RDU)
  • Charlotte International Airport (CLT)

Hotels

When coming into the area and needing a place to stay, you will need to decide if you need a pet friendly place to stay, or just a hotel for humans. Other things to keep in mind;

  • Location and proximity to the pick up location
  • How heavy traffic might be when driving from further locations. Construction plays a huge roll in arrival times.
  • Whether you are picking your baby up the night before and taking them back to the room to leave directly the next day or are you picking up your puppy the next day?
  • The airport you will be flying in/out of
  • Cost
  • The number of days
