Good Morning family

The puppy registration will be submitted by the breeder 7 days after the pick-up date. AKC send new families electronic transfer verification and then mail paper documentation.

Grooming videos on this site will familiarize new families with the hygiene routine we will be performing prior to your new puppy’s pickup.  We recommend families bring a hard-sided puppy carrying crate for safe transporting of your new puppy along with some kind of harness or collar, and leash on pick up day (size XXS).

ProPlan puppy toy formula

Pro Plan Focus  Chicken and Rice formula for toy breeds.  The recent craze in diets have suggested feeding all grain-free diets.  We do NOT recommend this for two reasons:

  1. Small dogs can not process all of the protein and can form painful urine crystals or kidney stones.  Protein content should be lower than 30%.
  2. There has been a very strong link to congestive heart failure to an all grain free diet.  We do not have wolves.  Our canines have been domesticated for a long time.  They have not had a need for all of the protein for wilderness survival.

When you pickup your new puppy, it will have received one Distemper/Parvo booster.  Puppies need 4 Distemper/Parvo shots before 16 weeks old to establish good immunity.  The vaccines need to be spaced four weeks apart.  Your vet will know how to schedule the vaccines according to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation’s recommendations.

We advise taking the daily recommended amount (listed on the back of the food bag, based on your puppy’s weight) and putting that in a bowl each morning. Place it down in the morning and if that amount is still available at the end of the day, you know your puppy is not eating as much as is recommended. We also encourage timed feeding where the bowl is placed down in the morning for about 15 minutes then taken up. Placing it back down at lunch time for about 15 minutes and then again at dinner time. This scheduling will help train your puppy’s bowels. It will also help train them to eat when there is food. Your puppy will need to go potty most likely about 10-15 minutes after they have eaten, so be prepared.

Yes! We administer Strongid at week 2, week 4, and week 6 based on the weight of each puppy. After pickup, families should start their puppies on a heartworm preventative medication. Your veterinarian will prescribe the appropriate pill form brand and may recommend an additional de-worming. Your new puppy will also need a yearly heartworm fecal test beginning with its first exam with your vet,

We do not recommend filling up puppy tummies with treats as they need balanced nutrition for healthy growth.  Treats however, are an essential part of any training regime (outside toileting, responding to name, learning commands, etc.) We suggest finding something that is soft, that your pup is excited about, will work for to receive, and with minimal calories (3-5 calories per treat) as they might be getting quite a few in the training process.  Some treats are full of extra fat and calories that can cause diarrhea.

There is a list on my website under “Supplies for a new Puppy” that references some items that we use or have used for our dogs. You can order them through the webesite link on Amazon.com or Chewy.com. You can also check the AKC New Puppy Essentials page for items you should have on puppy’s arrival home.
